According to figures from Newzoo, an international consultant, video games globally generated revenues of over US$184 billion in 2023, surpassing the film industry in earnings. The exponential growth in the gaming industry has significantly increased the demand for hardware and games, prompting serious questions about their ecological footprint.


This article aims to raise awareness and foster reflection on the environmental impact of video games. By analysing the striking data and figures, we can better understand our challenges and propose solutions to minimise the effect. As the video game industry continues expanding, it is crucial to work together to ensure this beloved form of entertainment is sustainable and environmentally friendly.


As video games have become a fundamental part of contemporary culture, examining their impact on the environment is crucial. In this regard, let’s delve into the various components contributing to the environmental impact of this industry.


Energy Consumption and Carbon Footprint

The production of video games involves extensive development, including graphics creation, animation, programming, and testing. These processes require significant electrical energy, both to power development equipment and the servers used for online testing and updates. In addition to energy consumption during the development phase, video games also demand considerable energy during their use. Gaming devices, such as consoles and computers, consume significant electricity, primarily when used for extended periods. For example, video game consoles like PlayStation and Xbox have an average power consumption of around 100-200 watts during gameplay, which is an overall increase compared to previous consoles.


Moreover, the demand for online game servers is also a significant concern. These servers operate continuously to maintain online multiplayer platforms, implying constant energy consumption. Additionally, the infrastructure necessary for these servers, such as cooling systems, consumes significant energy.

Among these materials are metals like copper, aluminium, and gold, as well as plastics and other chemical compounds. Players can consider reusing gaming devices instead of buying new ones with each upgrade. At the end of their lifespan, instruments should be appropriately recycled through electronic recycling programs or returned to the manufacturer for appropriate waste management.
