Bye Sweet Carole, A Humble Review

It was a time when England still breathed beneath a heavy layer of fog and silence. The streets smelled of coal and rain, and the gas lamps cast long, flickering shadows across the facades of forgotten buildings. Everything appeared dignified, yet cold as a world without sun. People believed in progress, even though they were afraid of their own shadows. Fighters for freedom often had to remain silent because every attempt to breathe differently represented a threat to order.
In such a dark and melancholic world, we meet Lana Benton, a child with no home and no choice, sent to an orphanage. As a newly arrived girl, she was observed with quiet distrust. Over time, that silence grew into cruelty, whispers behind her back, cold glances in the hallway that spoke clearly that she was not welcome there in Bunny Hall.
Yet, in the midst of that cold silence, Carole Simmons appeared, the only girl who did not look through her, but into her. Equally unaccepted by their peers and teachers, the two girls found in one another a reflection of their own loneliness, from which an unexpected friendship was born.

How Bye Sweet Carole Blends Mystery and Horror Through Lana’s Rabbit Transformation

During the years spent in Bunny Hall, while others passed through their days obediently and without words, they would sit by the window in the early evening, talking and reading old books they found in the library cabinets. But one day, Carole simply disappeared. Rumors spread that she had run away, that she could no longer endure the strict everyday life of the orphanage. While others accepted her disappearance lightly, Lana, however, could not accept that version. In her mind, over time, a suspicion began to form that Carole had not left on her own, but that someone else had been involved. Her intuition deepened further when, the very next day, she unexpectedly found a letter from her friend in the garden.
The traces from those letters led Lana further and further away from the familiar world and deeper into something she could hardly explain. That is how she discovered Corolla, a strange, almost fairytale-like world filled with ash, tar, coal, and rabbits. On the other side of that world awaited Mr. Kyn, a terrifying figure that followed her every step like a shadow. From that moment on, her search for the truth turned into a struggle with something that transcended reason, a world in which she awakens as a small and vulnerable rabbit, trapped in a story where she can no longer cope with her own emotions.
With a new ability to suddenly transform into a rabbit, Lana uses every opportunity to progress through this slightly mysterious adventure. By using that form, she explores hidden passages, solves mysterious tasks, and manages to navigate situations that would be inaccessible to her in human form, while tension and horror elements gradually reveal themselves through every step and decision.
Stealth and Tension in Bye Sweet Carole
Lana quickly learns to wisely switch between her forms to survive what Corolla hides. In human form, she can move heavier objects, walk along the edges of paths, use tools she finds along the way, or activate levers. But when she becomes a rabbit, everything changes. Cunning gives way to agility, and progress depends on precise jumps, double jumps, climbing, and the speed with which she hops away from danger. Darkness constantly breathes down her neck, and the light of a candle is often the only thing standing between her and what lurks in the shadows.
The threats also become increasingly challenging. Besides the disturbing echoes and noises, Lana is hunted by creatures whose shapes are so twisted that it is difficult to even recognize what they once were. Their presence is announced by howls, creaking floors, and background music that pierces through the dark depths like the short breath of a nightmare. In such moments, there is no room for combat, only for instinctive survival. The sound was further enhanced by our brand new XP-Radar-3D headset.
By hiding behind old wardrobes, staircases, under tables, and the like, Lana tries to hold her breath and silence every movement, aware that even the slightest sound could attract their attention. But even when she decides to run, there is still no safety, because every overturned object and broken plate can give her away. Although she often navigates the adventure as if playing a game of hide-and-seek, that constant tension, the feeling that she is always one step away from being discovered, makes every encounter with an enemy unpredictable and disturbingly real.
Baesie as a Key Ally and Cooperative Puzzle Design
Despite all this, she is not alone. At her side is Baesie, a strange, tall, and kind ally who manages to communicate with her through hand movements despite having no mouth. In certain segments, Baesie takes on an essential role, and the alternating control of characters allows Lana and him to be used interchangeably to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles.
His presence brings a sense of support and strategy, opening possibilities that Lana alone could not achieve. As a doll, he is resistant to any attacks from enemies and natural elements such as electricity and fire. If an electric mechanism needs to be activated at a distance, he can conduct electricity and thus activate what is needed. The same applies to fire. When encountering narrow passages that even Lana cannot pass through, Baesie can compress himself almost into a flat shape and squeeze through the smallest cracks.
During combat sequences in the story, he uses his large umbrella to shield Lana. Although these conflicts appear only occasionally, they last somewhat longer and bring a tense dynamic and sense of tactics into an otherwise exploratory and puzzle-oriented game. The opponents, however, are one-dimensional and easy to defeat.
The gameplay relies on classic 2D platforming foundations and logical puzzles that naturally fit into the environment. However, the game often suffers from an overly slow pace, where the moments between more significant events tend to drag out, making it easy to lose the sense of progression. Instead of tension, a calm tone dominates, one that initially feels soothing, but over time can become monotonous.
Intimate Storytelling Through a Constant Narrator

The fairytale gradually unfolds through ten chapters, and between them, you encounter numerous additional tasks that encourage exploration and thoughtful problem-solving. Although the very nature of these tasks differs, the approach remains similar. One must always carefully explore the environment, collect key items, and connect them with one another in order to ultimately unlock the main obstacle that leads further.
As the adventure approaches its end, the puzzles become more demanding, requiring item combinations and careful observation of the world’s details. Every successfully solved challenge moves the mystery toward resolution, adding layers to the story and opening new clues and connections that gradually reveal the deeper secret behind Carole’s disappearance.
Today, there are many narrative games, but it is rare to encounter one where the narrator continuously comments, especially vocally, on every important action throughout the story. It is precisely this constant presence of the narrator that creates a sense of intimate storytelling, connecting us with the story and characters, almost as if someone is whispering and revealing what even the heroes themselves cannot yet see.
Through visuals and design alone, it is difficult to fully convey the depth of this story. It is a dark and eerie fairytale that does not shy away from real-life problems of the early 20th century. The central theme explores how optimism and pessimism can drastically shape the world and the people around us. The girls face social pressures and roles imposed upon them by others, yet through ideas, they slowly gain strength, while hope remains the first step toward creating positive change and revolution. At the same time, the mutual dynamic and development of the relationship between Lana and Baesie gradually unfold and become increasingly complex, making everything as a whole more emotionally heavy.
Strengths and Weaknesses in Bye Sweet Carole
While the narrator guides us through the thoughts and feelings of the characters, the visual style reveals its full value. The world is hand-drawn and inspired by animation from the 90s, and the main character, through her expressions and gesture,s resembles the very first animated Snow White. The atmosphere and environmental design are reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland and Watership Down, where the blend of strange and eerie tones fits extremely well with the narrative itself. Even the transition from gameplay to cutscene is executed fluidly.
Unfortunately, the same cannot fully be said for the technical aspect of the game. The game is not hardware-demanding at all, yet during play, I encountered quite a number of bugs. Fortunately, most of them did not prevent progress, but at times, they significantly disrupted the overall impression. The most common problems included enemies getting stuck, the character falling while climbing ladders, sudden audio glitches that I could only fix by exiting the game, and in the final third of the story, the voices sounded as if someone had recorded them in very poor quality, almost mumbling.
In Conclusion

Bye Sweet Carole is a rare experience that attempts to merge narration and gameplay into a harmonious, almost literary whole. The game succeeds in evoking a wide spectrum of emotions from tension and fear to humor and joy, while through interaction with characters and puzzle-solving, you feel a genuine connection with the story. Although the visual presentation and atmosphere leave a powerful impression and make every moment feel rich and rewarding, the lack of dynamism and the overall slow pace slightly diminish the experience. Bye Sweet Carole simply demands perhaps more patience than most players will be willing to give.
From a mechanical standpoint, the game uses all available tools of the classic adventure genre and does not reinvent the wheel nor fully stand out from others. Nothing in the game is complicated; in fact, I liked how curiosity rewards the player with clear indications of what to do and where to go. Occasional technical issues and an inconsistent camera sometimes disrupt the gameplay experience, but these shortcomings do not manage to ruin the twelve hours of enjoyment, because the core of the game is so strong and carefully crafted that every moment spent still leaves a deep emotional impact.
Game Rating:8.3
I would rate the game 8.3 / 10, because it delivers a deeply emotional narrative, strong atmosphere, and unique tone, but its slow pacing, bugs, and occasional technical issues slightly weaken the overall experience.
Recommended Age Group:12+
I would recommend this game for ages 12+, because although it lacks graphic violence, it contains psychologically intense themes, dark atmosphere, unsettling creatures, and emotional tension that may be too disturbing or complex for younger children.
